On Saturday, October 17, shooters gather on Sheridan Valley Road at what used to be a ski club. The Lewiston Sportsmen's League now runs it on 120 acres, with a 14-station sporting clays course and 28 automatic traps. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day, the club holds its 4th Annual Fall Color Turkey Shoot, which it bills as a fun, friendly competition for members and guests only.
The shoot opens three days that close out most of Lewiston's warm-weather calendar. Fall Fest is already over. The Montmorency County Tribune's October 7 edition reported that downtown "was abuzz" on October 4, with free apples, ice cream and candy, hot dogs from the 50 Plus Club, potato car races, and a horse-drawn carriage running families out to the pumpkin patch. What's left in October is quieter, and much of it ends on the same weekend.
Three Days, Three Venues
The Lewiston Chamber's 2026 community events sheet and its Cars & Coffee flyer show how tightly the closing dates bunch together.
- Saturday, Oct. 17. The Fall Color Turkey Shoot at the Sportsmen's League grounds, 7689 Sheridan Valley Rd., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., members and guests.
- Sunday, Oct. 18. The last day of Garland Lodge & Resort's posted fall golf rate period, which started September 28.
- Monday, Oct. 19. The last Cars & Coffee of 2026 on Kneeland Street, 5 to 8 p.m.
Each of these is the end of a run that began months ago. The turkey shoot is the League's big fall gathering before November's public event. Garland's rates page sets out a fall season with an end date. Cars & Coffee has met on a Monday every month since May 18. By Tuesday morning, nearly every recurring summer event in town has finished.
Garland's Fall Rates Run Out on Sunday
Garland's public rates table for 2026 lists fall golf at $70 on weekdays and $90 Friday through Sunday. Twilight play after 4 p.m. drops to $45 and $55. That makes Sunday the 18th the last day of the posted fall window, and a weekend afternoon round after 4 p.m. costs $35 less than the full weekend rate. The page lists dates and prices but not a course closing date, so it's best to treat October 18 as the end of the fall pricing period. The courses may stay open past it. The resort can confirm.
The resort is closing out a milestone year too. Garland calls 2026 its 75th anniversary and dates its original nine-hole course to 1951. Last winter it offered cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, snow golf, bingo, sleigh rides and themed dinners, with overnight stays on January and February weekends. That was the program for the season that just ended. The resort hasn't published a schedule for the coming winter.
Monday Night Is the Last Kneeland Street Gathering
The Cars & Coffee flyer keeps it simple: bring a chair, bring a warm cup of coffee, and look at performance cars and classics on Kneeland Street from 5 to 8 p.m. The flyer also invites people to "Stop in and Check out the Special Finds at our Local Retailers." The 2026 dates were May 18, June 22, July 20, August 17, September 21 and October 19. No date is listed after that.
One of those retailers ties Monday night to the rest of the month. Tee Lake Mercantile, at 2850 Kneeland Street, sells custom local apparel and souvenirs along with clothing, home goods, drinkware and jewelry. It's the storefront for Tee Lake Resort, and that resort runs the longest-running event on Lewiston's October calendar.
What Holds the Last Two Weeks of October
After the 19th, most of what's left belongs to Halloween, and Tee Lake Resort carries a good share of it. The Chamber lists the Tee Lake Halloween Spooktacular from September 25 through October 31. The resort describes the main attraction like this:
"a FREE, self-guided, musical, walking (or drive-thru) tour through haunted displays glowing nightly from dusk to 10pm starting the last weekend in September through Halloween. Open to the public."
Tee Lake has four rental cabins, so it's a small property. Two of those cabins are Halloween-themed: the Witch's Cottage and Igor's Hideaway. The resort keeps the whole property decorated from late September through Halloween. The displays light up every night, so they fill the evenings between the bigger dates.
The rest of the month on the Chamber sheet:
- Oct. 23: Bethlehem Lutheran Church Family Game Night, 4 to 6 p.m.
- Oct. 31: Halloween in town at various locations, plus Trunk & Treats.
On Saturday the 24th, a short drive west, the Pigeon River Country State Forest Discovery Center at 9984 Twin Lakes Road in Vanderbilt hosts a Nature Photography session from 10 a.m. to noon. Registration is required. The timing fits the season. The Michigan DNR names September and October as the popular months for elk viewing in a range that takes in Montmorency County, and it says dawn and dusk are the best times to look. Dusk is also when the Tee Lake displays come on, so late October evenings around Lewiston offer both.
The Former Ski Hill Opens Its Gates
The Sportsmen's League hosts the turkey shoot on October 17, and it also hosts the first event open to everyone after Halloween. On November 13 and 14, the club holds its Annual Rifle Sight-in Days, open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
| Fall Color Turkey Shoot | Annual Rifle Sight-in Days | |
|---|---|---|
| Date | Sat., Oct. 17, 2026 | Fri.–Sat., Nov. 13–14, 2026 |
| Hours | 10 a.m.–3 p.m. | 10 a.m.–3 p.m. |
| Who can come | Members and guests only | Open to the public |
| Setup | Friendly competition | Covered benches, targets from 25 to 200 yards |
| Cost | Not listed | $5 per gun, including a target and use of spotting scopes |
The club runs the sight-in rain or shine and pitches it to "seasoned marksman" and "first-time rifle owner" alike, as a way to get a rifle on target before the next hunt. The posted calendars show nothing for Kneeland Street or Garland's courses that weekend. The Sheridan Valley Road range, closed to the public on October 17, becomes the one public gathering place in mid-November.
The Smaller Deadlines Behind the Calendar
The township has a deadline of its own. Albert Township's 2026 newsletter says the transfer station is closed Tuesdays and Thursdays, open weekends from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and shuts for the season from December 1 until the second Monday in April. That gives about four weeks after Halloween for fall cleanup runs. Leaves, garden waste and anything else left from the season need to go out before that window shuts for the winter.
That cleanup lines up with the township's "Blight to Beauty" campaign. Albert Township announced in May that enforcement and penalties would start July 1, 2026, so the rules are already in effect this fall. The township is also raising money with engraved bricks for a planned sidewalk from Olsen Street to the pavilion. The April announcement gave no construction date.
Here are Lewiston's fall dates in order. The Spooktacular runs nightly through October 31. Saturday the 17th is the members-and-guests turkey shoot, Sunday the 18th is the last day of Garland's fall rates, and Monday the 19th is the last Cars & Coffee. Bethlehem Lutheran's game night is on the 23rd, Halloween and Trunk & Treats fall on the 31st, the public rifle sight-in runs November 13 and 14, and the transfer station closes December 1.
Laura and Kayla follow these dates because they set the pace of life around East and West Twin Lakes as much as any market report does.
